Community programme to prevent drug use and to promote healthy living among young people

The project ‘Community-Based Programme for Drug Prevention in Schools’ is financed under the MATRA programme of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affaires and is realized in Sofia, in Blagoevgrad and in Kazanlak with the methodological expertise of Trimbos Institute, Dutch institute for mental health and addictions.

The basic aim of the project, which is implemented in the period March 2004 – December 2006, is the elaboration of a comprehensive, effective and coherent school-based programme in Health Education, applicable in secondary education in Bulgaria and grounded on the best European practices in the domain.
In the long run, the project goal is to reduce the level of risk behaviour among young people and to raise public awareness about the need for Bulgarian school and its immediate surroundings to be established as a healthy environment, where the principles of healthy lifestyle are strongly advocated of.

The direct project beneficiaries are:

  • Students in the project pilot schools;
  • Teachers and non-teaching staff, who acquire knowledge and skills in the field of health education by their active participation in the project;
  • Representatives of local authorities, professionals in the field of health and education;
  • Experts in the field of education and health, operating on national level;
  • Professionals and volunteers, who would like to be trained on the programme and to take parts in its consecutive dissemination.

In order for the set aims and objectives to be reached, the project is implemented on three levels: school, municipal and national level.
